Building Bridges in Bergen: Tackling Gender Gaps in Life Sciences

On the morning before International Women’s Day, over 300 professionals gathered in Bergen for a compelling event hosted by Connect Vest, VIS, and NHO Vestland. WiLD Norway’s Founder & Chair, Chelsea Ranger, delivered a powerful call to action—drawing attention to the growing gap between Norway’s progressive gender equality policies and the ongoing imbalance in life sciences leadership and investment.

The Gaps Are Clear

Despite Norway’s Export Strategy, Gender Balance Regulations for Boards, and Women’s Health Strategy, the reality on the ground remains stark:

  • Only 19 percent of CEOs in life sciences are women

  • Just 13 percent of board chairs, 21 percent of board members, and 20 percent of founders are women

  • 76 percent of life science companies are not subject to gender balance regulations

Norway’s healthcare system is powered by women, yet decisions about research, leadership, and funding are still male-dominated. The consequences?

  • Less research into diseases that disproportionately affect women

  • Fewer clinical trials accounting for biological sex differences

  • Limited investment in female-led health startups

A Powerful Discussion

We were inspired by the conversations and grateful to connect with speakers and attendees including Madeleine Bjørnestad Røed (Stackx.me), Silje Maeland (University of Bergen), Behnaz Ganji (DNB), Merete Husebø (Equinor), and Kristine K. Timberlid (Innovation Norway).

From menopause research to financial literacy, workplace inclusion to investment equity, the message was clear: real progress starts with real conversations and intentional action.

Let’s keep the momentum going, together.
